Surrounded by breath-taking scenery, Turkey is an exciting holiday destination blending Oğuz Turkic, Anatolian and Ottoman cultures, but it’s also a great place to book beach holidays in excellent seaside resorts on the coast. Resorts in Antalya, Bodrum, Dalaman and Izmir are popular for their natural beauty, wealth of water sports and historical sites.

For this reason, many visitors tour the western coast of Turkey, booking package holidays on the Turquoise Coast or travelling from Istanbul to coastal resorts where the Mediterranean Sea and ancient ruins are beautifully complemented by the slopes of the Taurus Mountains. Fill in your holiday dates to visit this fascinating channel between Asia and Europe, where the legendary walls of Troy still stand and the ghosts of Ottoman Kings reside.

Adventure in Antalya

Antalya is Turkey’s biggest holiday resort on the south western Mediterranean coast of the country. Perhaps one of the best things about this resort is its location in the protected foothills of the Taurus Mountains.

Blue Flag Lara Beach (just over seven miles from the city) is one of the best places to enjoy the weather, and there are plenty of umbrellas, sun loungers, beach bars and nearby restaurants from which to carry on the party.

Antalya is also a great place to enjoy activity holidays including golf, river rafting, diving in the Mediterranean, visiting the Troy Aqua Park, history tours around the old cities of Kaleici and Aspendos, shopping, horse riding, jeep safaris and much more.

Clubbing in Marmaris

Also in the southwest, Marmaris which is located in the Dalaman region is one of the most exciting resort cities in terms of its nightlife. Many of the early evening fun-pubs are located in Long Beach in places like Turtle Bar, which hosts karaoke, or Talk of the Town that does popular Drag Shows, while in Bar Street partygoers can find a wide range of clubs such as Galeon, Green House, Back Street or Crazy Daisy that remain open through the night.

Not just a place for parties, Marmaris has a long coastline met by pine-covered hills, and its major marinas make it a centre for diving, sailing and boating. A popular site to visit near Marmaris is Pamukkale, or “cotton castle”. Formed by rich thermal springs it has huge stalactites, cataracts, cascades, basins – and best of all – hot springs for tourists to swim in, used since Roman times for their therapeutic powers.

Romantic Bodrum

Travelling north, Bodrum is a port city on the south western coast of the country. It lies in the heart of the Turkish Riviera or Turquoise Coast, encapsulating holiday gems such as Gumbet, Altinkum and Turgutreis to name but a few. The combination of sunny climate, warm seas and endless shorelines means that resorts have the resources to provide water sports such as sailing, scuba diving, sea kayaking and mountain sports including biking, abseiling and even hot air ballooning.

There are significant archaeological remains in these areas including the remains of the Mausoleum of Maussollos, which was built for a Persian governor near present-day Bodrum (this is the source of the modern word “mausoleum” meaning grand tomb). Famous for its natural beauty, the Turquoise Coast is the destination Mark Antony (powerful Roman politician and general) picked as a wedding gift to Cleopatra of Egypt.
