A mixture of old and new

Budapest might seem like a flash in the past – captivating you with classical splendor at every turn – but there’s much more to this city than just its historic appearance. The city’s unique nightlife scene is a perfect example, boasting the best in rooftops and ruin bars.

If you’re wanting views for miles around, one of the many chic rooftop bars will certainly deliver on both beer and beauty. The High Note SkyBar has to be one of our favourites, serving up sublime views of St Stephen’s Basilica as well as the Buda hills.

If it’s a quiet drink you’re looking for, then you’ll no doubt find yourself in one of the rustic ruin pubs scattered across the city. These beer gardens and clubs take shape in the form of previous residential courtyards and are famed for being quirky in their nature. We’re talking cheap drinks, live music and a wonderful yet wacky atmosphere.

There’s no shortage of watering holes by the river too of course – there’s a whole host of trendy places just waiting to rustle you up your favourite tipple in tranquil surroundings.

Spa break, anyone?

One thing to remember when you visit Budapest – don’t forget your swimsuit! The Romans first discovered the city’s healing thermal springs over 2000 years ago, and today you can choose from five fantastic medicinal baths featuring a total of 47 pools. They’re certainly not your average swimming pools – more like examples of amazing architecture!

A visit to Szechenyi Thermal Bath is an absolute must – it’s the largest spa in Europe and is known as the home of health and rejuvenation. These 100 year old baths are supplied with water from two thermal springs, with a fantastic 15 indoor pools to test out as well as three gigantic outdoor ones.

Make sure to plan your day of relaxation after you’ve explored Budapest’s intricate underground caves – it’s the only capital in the world where you’ll find caves underneath its streets!. The two most popular lie deep in the Buda Hills, known as Pálvölgyi (Paul Valley) and Szemlőhegyi (Szemlo Hill).

Prepare to be wowed by captivating crystal formations, not to mention staring in sheer amazement at the unique stalactites and stalagmites. The walk through these caves will leave you feeling like you’ve stepped into an unknown universe – a spa day will be well deserved after all that adventure!
