Explore The Many Districts Of Munich
There are so many sides of Munich to discover on your city break. One of the main, central points in the city is the Marienplatz, a stunning market square where you’ll find the Neues Rathaus (new city hall) and the Altes Rathaus (old town hall). There’s so much history here – not only is it dotted with statues and landmarks dating back to the 1600s, but once upon a time it was a popular site for medieval jousting tournaments too.
Whilst it’s one of the main tourist spots, there’s more to the city than this iconic square. In fact, when it comes to things to do in Munich, you’ll be spoilt for choice! You could take a bike ride around the beautiful English Garden, wander the palace of Munich Residenz, visit the spectacular Olympic Park, marvel at swish cars at the BMW Welt or even spend an afternoon with the animals at Hellabrunn Zoo. Grab a pen and make a start on your Munich to-do list!
Year-Round City Exploring
You can visit Munich at any time of year and look forward to an incredible time. The summer months are perfect for wandering the Old Town, picnicking by the river and attending endless cool events – think open-air cinemas, fun fairs and everything in between! If you’re more of a winter city break person, expect dazzling Christmas markets and maybe even a sprinkling of snow. This city gets pretty chilly in winter!
When the weather is good, there’s no end to the walking routes and picturesque green space to enjoy. If you ever need a place to warm up, Munich has long had a place on the map for its excellent art and museum scene. You could head to the Kunstareal, a cultural hub with plenty of famous venues showcasing art through the ages, along with more than 40 galleries to browse. And if this isn’t your idea of fun, there’s always the pub!
Get The Beers In
Germany is the beer capital of the world, and in Munich it’s not hard to see why! It’s home to six huge breweries concocting world-class barrels for bars around the world, and there are pubs galore in the city housing hundreds of local beers to try. Of course, one of the biggest events of the year is the loud, colourful, chaotic and frankly fabulous Oktoberfest. If you’re a lover of beer, this huge party should be at the top of your bucket list.
The enthusiasm and passion of the Germans is so evident when you visit Oktoberfest. You’ll never be without a tankard and you’ll spend hours dancing, chanting and meeting new people. Munich is famous for its traditional costumes of Lederhosen and Dirndl, specifically when celebrating at the festival, so don’t be surprised if you see plenty on your trip. You could even get into the spirit yourself and come prepared with a costume!
Step Out Of The Ordinary
You won’t struggle to find something a little quirky and different on your city break to Munich. There are endless things to do and see, from oompah bands in edgy bars to surfers taking on the unique Eisbach wave. In a city like this, we’d recommend you take a day to simply see what you find when you wander without direction. You never know – it could be the best day of your trip!
One of our favourite weird and wonderful activities in Munich helps you to see the city from a slightly different angle – on a segway! Segway tours are so much fun and a great way to explore all the things Munich has to offer with a guide fully equipped to teach you about the city. If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, some alternative activities include indoor skydiving, escape rooms and day trips to Bavarian castles. You’ll never be bored here!
