Initially an RAF base the Airport was closed in 1961. It was then purchased by Cleveland County Council and developed into a commercial airport, opening a passenger terminal in 1966, and it has since developed into a regional Airport in the North East of England. Originally called Teesside International Airport, it changed its name in 2004 to the now familiar Durham Tees Valley Airport.

The Airport is located approximately 10km east of Darlington and 16km south-west of Middlesbrough. It is also 39km from Durham with easy access to Stockton, Hartlepool and Newcastle. Durham Tees Valley is situated on the A67 lying between the A1 and A19 North and South and travelling East to West the A66. It has rail links with Darlington and there is a free bus service to and from the Airport to the rail station.
