Cardiff Airport is the only airport in Wales to offer international scheduled flights and sees nearly 1.5 million passengers pass through its terminal every year. The airport was originally opened in 1942 as an RAF training base. Its commercial value was realised in the 1950's when Aer Lingus began a service to Dublin, a new terminal followed and in the 1960's with the boom in package holidays, passengers exceeded 100,000. Originally known as Rhoose Airport this name was changed in the 1970's to Glamorgan Rhoose Airport, it was further upgraded to Cardiff Wales Airport in the 1980's, followed by Cardiff International Airport and as part of a rebranding exercise in May 2009, was again renamed and became known as Cardiff Airport.
Cardiff Airport is located approximately 12 miles west of the city centre in the village of Rhoose. There is access via Junction 33 of the M4. A rail link connects Rhoose Cardiff International Airport Station to Cardiff Central and Bridgend. The X91 bus service operates between Cardiff Central station and Cardiff Airport every two hours during the day seven days a week.
