Perhaps the most difficult thing on holidays to the Italian Lakes is deciding which lake to visit. There are three main lakes which are usually high on most people’s agenda however there are plenty of smaller ones that whilst still popular are a little less crowded.

On the banks of Lake Como, impressive villas lie located close to the water's edge, which makes it an enjoyable place to relax in luxurious surroundings and take leisurely strolls along the waters edge.

Lake Garda holidays are extremely popular as the region has facilities for windsurfing and mountain biking along with plenty of attractive mountain trails to tackle on foot or bicycle.

Holidays on Lake Maggiore attract visitors from all over Europe with its superb views. Lake Maggiore holidays also offer the opportunity to take a trip to the Borromean Isles where the incredible baroque palace on Isola Bella houses priceless paintings, tapestries and furniture.

There are plenty of other interesting sites to look for around the Italian Lakes region including medieval castles and elegant 18th century villas. For the best views take a cable car up to a higher vantage point to take in the terrific scenery. Verona, Venice, Milan and St Moritz are all possible day excursions from the Italian Lakes, although it would depend on which lake you were staying near.

Generally speaking, Italian Lakes holidays are best suited to people that enjoy a bit of peace and tranquillity and the chance to dine al fresco in some splendid sumptuous settings. Walking and hiking are popular pastimes on Italian Lakes holidays although the views are of course equally enjoyable from the comfort of a Lakeside cafe.

Did you know? The wedding scene from Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, when Anakin marries Padme Amidala in a secret ceremony, was filmed at the Villa of Balbianello, on the shores of Lake Como.
