Madeira isn’t known for its soft sandy beaches, but there are a few gorgeous pebbly stretches perfect to still lay out your towel. Pebbly Formosa Beach is the largest in Funchal and All Inclusive hotels tend to hang around this end of town. Canico de Baixo and Santa Cruz both have pebbly beaches offering plenty of watersports, with Santa Cruz’s Palmeiras Beach also having two swimming pools at hand. If you must have sand, stay at the Savoy Calheta Beach to be right on Calheta’s golden sandy beach and next to the marina.

After your four-hour flight to Madeira, transfers to the All Inclusive resorts along the southern coast are nice and short, with Santa Cruz and Canico de Baixo within 15 minutes’ drive, and Funchal in the 45-minute range.
Madeira’s capital, Funchal, is bustling but not too big, with a picturesque old town and marina plus lots of shops, bars and restaurants housed in grand buildings. Many of the All Inclusive hotels are a little way from the centre so they can have bigger grounds and a closer proximity to the lido and excellent Formosa Beach.
To the east are Canico de Baixo and Santa Cruz – both peaceful and beautiful places to stay All Inclusive, and each having a lido. In Canico de Baixo, most All Inclusive hotels are located in the newer Baixo area and you’ll find excellent restaurants in the nearby old town. Further east, Santa Cruz has a waterpark, market and plenty of watersports, including a surf school.
