A little bit of everything

Sprawling out across Crete’s northern coast, Hersonissos brilliantly combines sand and fun to make one of the island’s top holiday destinations. When you spot the town’s three waterparks, stretch of beaches and watersports, dance clubs and designer shops, you’ll soon see why.

Hersonissos doesn’t just specialise in one facet of Greek holidays – here, you’ve got everything from golf courses to theme parks, scuba centres to local tavernas. Lazy days of indulging in ice cream along the beach to long nights at coastal bars. Travelling as a family, just as a couple or with a group of friends, there are a multitude of options when it comes to Greece package holidays in Hersonissos.

Action-packed beaches

The resort features three sandy beaches, plus a wider collection of small coves that curve in and out of the coastline. Throughout peak season the shores are packed with activity, from jet skis to banana boats and paragliders, not to mention boats bobbing in the nearby harbour.

If relaxation is more your speed, there are sunloungers to rent and umbrellas to shelter you from the gorgeous Grecian sun, plus beach bars and waterfront tavernas. At the far end of the coast, there’s a naturist area where you can even out your tan lines while the wildly popular Star Beach is topped with the aptly-named Star Beach Water Park.

Three water parks

If you’re travelling with kids, you won’t have to worry about combatting boredom on this holiday, as Hersonissos is home to not one but three waterparks – Water City, the Aqua Plus Water Park and the Star Beach Water Park. Each features winding water slides, pools and splash parks that make for hours of fun.

There’s also the Aquaworld Aquarium & Reptile Rescue Centre which houses local scaly creatures that you and little ones can get the chance to hold. While the Happy Train is a family-friendly locomotive that’ll take you around the sights with minimum effort.

Most days in Hersonissos are spent outdoors, as the vast majority of attractions are geared to get you out and experiencing the beach-focused landscape. Hersonissos comes equipped with diving centres where you can suit up and scuba or snorkel around the coast, plus hiking trips and horseback riding clubs. The town is also home to the Crete Golf Club, which is the only golf course on the island, and fully equipped with 18 holes.

Party paradise

Hersonissos enjoys long, relaxing days and even longer, energetic nights. The waterfront is lined with bars and dance spots, plus swanky beach clubs that’ll have you lounging along the sand with a tall cocktail in hand. There are more intimate pubs and karaoke spots as well, plus laid-back nights to be had in local tavernas with live music and homemade Cretan wine.

Just on the other side of Hersonissos is Malia, one of Greece’s nightlife capitals and the liveliest spot on the island. Along the resort’s popular Beach Road, you’ll find everything from foam parties to clubs outfitted like castles, sports bars and karaoke palaces.

Greek coastal eats

Dining in Hersonissos requires a schedule of its own, as there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from. Unsurprisingly, Greek fare dominates the dining scene, though you’ll find most menus peppered with Mediterranean influences and fresh seafood, plus the occasional gastropub and international cuisine.

What sets the restaurants apart are their settings and atmospheres – in Hersonissos, you’ll find everything from quaint cafes to candlelit meals, casual beach eats to family-run tavernas. On top of this, there are also a range of coffee and ice cream spots for on-the-go bites or lazy afternoons.

Designer brands at bargain prices

Walking through the streets of Hersonissos, you’re bound to notice its array of shops as the town has some of the best shopping facilities on the island. And we aren’t just talking corner stores and souvenir shops, though you’ll definitely find quite a few that’ll provide you with a little slice of Crete for your home, or your taste buds. Along the coast are some seriously chic name brands, from Giorgio Armani to Diesel and Levi’s, where you can snag designer clothes for outlet prices.
