The Airport was originally opened in 1942 as an RAF training base. Its commercial value was realised in the 1950,s when Aer Lingus began a service to Dublin, a new terminal followed and in the 1960's with the boom in package holidays, passengers exceeded 100,000. Originally known as Rhoose Airport this name was changed in the 1970's to Glamorgan Rhoose Airport, it was further upgraded to Cardiff Wales Airport in the 1980's. It is now under the brand name of Cardiff International Airport and is one of the fastest growing regional Airports in the country.
Cardiff International Airport is located approximately 12 miles west of the city centre in the village of Rhoose. There is access via Junction 33 of the M4. The closest rail link to the Airport is Rhoose Cardiff International Airport railway station, with a free bus shuttle to the international terminal.
