Your Sightseeing Guide to Crete

Everyone who visits the islands of Greece can’t help but fall in love with them, and that’s definitely true of sunny Crete. Its inland mountains, gorgeous beaches and colourful buildings make it a treat for the senses, but if you’re looking to truly see the sights, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few of the must-visit Crete All Inclusive hotels.

Aghios Nikolaos

If you’re looking to check out a historic building or two, you might as well start with a whole town of them. Aghios Nikolaos’ harbour alone offers plenty of photogenic sights, but you can also take a boat trip from there to the tiny, historic island of Spinalonga.

Aghios Nikolaos is also home to the archaeological site of Priniatikos Pyrgos, where fascinating Minoan vases and relics have been uncovered. You can visit the Aghios Nikolaos Archaeology Museum, where these magnificent pieces are stored for all to see. Some of the artefacts here date back 6,000 years.

Hersonissos

If you’re only visiting Crete briefly but want to see as much as possible, Hersonissos could well be for you. The sprawling community covers the island’s northern coast, bringing with it some of the best adventures on offer.

Beaches and coves make for plenty of ways to get stuck into sunbathing and watersports, yet at Star Beach the neighbouring Star Beach Water Park adds rides, slides and plenty of fun to the mix. In fact, Hersonissos is the waterpark capital of the island, also home to Water City and Aqua Plus. For a more refined way to enjoy your downtime, check out Crete Golf Club here too, or head to Beach Road for a gaggle of themed bars and restaurants.

Chania

Chania is a handsome coastal city whose buildings are touched by a flavour of Venetian architecture. There’s still oodles of classic Crete charm to be had here though.

The beautiful lighthouse is a real claim to fame for the town – gorgeous from any angle – while the narrow streets of the old town show off coffee shops and family tavernas aplenty. Check out the Mercato Agoura di Chania too, a traditional market where you can sample locally produced honey, wine and olive oil, as well as handmade trinkets to take home.

Gouves

When it’s time to get back to nature, Gouves is just the ticket. Natural beaches cup this coastal town sweetly, while a hike inland can see you cresting the peak of Mount Ederi for some fantastic views.

The town itself has a lot of local charm, with classic lampposts and archways making you feel as though you’ve stepped into the past. It’s a laid-back town, yet nearby Pano Gouves is a hidden gem. The suburb boasts a quirky, downtempo appeal where coffee shop people watching is the order of the day.
