There’s plenty to do beyond your hotel in Costa De La Luz, from ancient Roman ruins and historic cities to nature reserves, waterparks and local wineries.

El Rompido is a good spot for a quieter beach day, while the dunes around Matalascañas are great for exploring. If you fancy trying something more adventurous, head to the Tarifa for kitesurfing or windsurfing.

For a dose of history, take a trip to Cádiz, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the western world. You can wander around its pretty plazas, visit the cathedral and Torre Tavira, or explore the Roman theatre. The ancient Roman city of Baelo Claudia is another fascinating day out, with ruins sitting right beside the beach.

Nature lovers can head to Doñana National Park, one of Europe’s most important wetland areas, where you can spot flamingos, migrating birds and other wildlife. Families can also spend a day at Aquopolis waterpark in Cartaya, with slides and attractions for both kids and grown-ups.

And if food and drink are your thing, head inland to Jerez de la Frontera for a winery or sherry tour. You can learn about the region’s famous sherry production before sampling some of the local tipple.
