Those in search of affordable days out should look towards Mexico’s beaches. Grab a snorkel and explore a magical underwater world in Riviera Maya with tropical fish, coral and more. The region also has a number of giant rock pools which are great for swimming in and surfing is another fun pastime. For window-shopping Cancun’s malls provide an array of visual delights, while those in search of affordable souvenirs or just want to soak up the atmosphere can head to lively Coral Negro Flea Market in the downtown area.

If you don’t want to pay for daytrips to the big Mayan sites, there are a number of places where small ancient ruins can be explored for free in Playa del Carmen. One is located just off 5th Avenue, and one near 2nd street, between the beach and 5th Avenue.
