Built in traditional Greek style, but thoroughly modern, you get sleek kitchens, three ensuite bedrooms, a 42-inch satellite plasma TV, DVD player and Wi-Fi at the Caldera Villas complex. Set just outside Platanias, looking over olive and orange groves, you can walk to town and the 10-kilometre-long Platanias Beach in 10 minutes.

Rustic beams, stone walls and inglenook fireplaces make this restored 400-year-old villa homely and full of charm. In the small village of Asteri, you get the benefit of a rural location while only being 20 minutes’ drive from Rethymnon.

It’s not all oldy-worldy at three-bed Anta Villa though as there’s a private pool with countryside views, free Wi-Fi and a fully kitted out, open plan kitchen. When you’re not cooking or using the barbecue, stroll 10 minutes to the nearby taverna.

This group of two and three bedroom villas is set in spacious and peaceful grounds with mountain views. It only takes 10 minutes on foot to be in the midst of Hersonissos’ bars and restaurants, but you wouldn’t think it when lounging on a sunbed by the private pool.

The nearest beach is 15 minutes away and you can wash down at the poolside shower when you get back. The traditional-style villas with beamed ceilings have all mod-cons, including flat screen TVs and sandwich toasters.

On the edge of Kolymbari, this group of three-bed villas overlooks fields and olive groves but you can be at the town’s tavernas in a five-minute drive or 20-minute walk. The nearest shop is 10 minutes on foot to buy supplies and cook them up in your well-stocked kitchen, and a pebbly beach is 15 minutes away.

Bikes are available to use so you can explore the area, and you get use of some of the excellent facilities at the nearby Selini Suites. After a day out and about, you can whip up a barbecue and enjoy it in the countryside-view garden beside your private pool.
