With such scenic locations on your doorstep, it’s easy to find somewhere to while away the hours while soaking up the culture of this rustic area of Corfu. Being influenced by the proximity to the sea, beaches are naturally one of the main attractions.
Perfect for families
The closest beach to Vigla is the sandy stretch at the village of Kalami, which is around 10 minutes away by car. Awarded Blue Flag status, the beach is clean and well-served by amenities. The sea is beautifully clear and invites you to hire a boat or canoe to explore the waters and beautiful views. The horseshoe-shaped bay is backed by pine forests, making the beach sheltered and ideal for families wanting to enjoy a safe day out by the sea. There are also plenty of rustic tavernas and beach bars for leisurely lunches and drinks.
Traditional fishing village
Under a 20-minute drive north takes you to the resort village of Kassiopi and its lovely harbour, large range of shops and traditional tavernas. One of the most intriguing sites is Kassiopi Castle, well worth the uphill walk from the village to reach. Built in the Byzantine period to defend the island, the castle is now mostly in ruins but is a place full of atmosphere and history. The views afforded over the harbour, town and out to Albania are truly stunning.
Visit Corfu Town
The island’s capital, Corfu Town, is a 45-minute drive south down the coast from Vigla. Corfu has a beautiful old town area that has narrow, winding streets just bursting with culture and history. Modern restaurants, bars and shops sit alongside museums and churches for a wonderfully quirky place to spend a few hours strolling around. Visit the Liston arcade with its impressive architecture and stylish terraces. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from and it’s the ideal place for people watching.
