Ibiza Clubbing – Then and Now

Known as the ‘White Isle’, Ibiza is just as famous for its music scene as it is for its glorious beaches. Each year celebrities mix with holidaymakers as they dance to the latest tunes. So, we think it’s time to celebrate Ibiza’s clubbing scene by taking a look at the last 35 years in dance music.

Step inside

1980’s

In this decade the island was more popular with Spanish and German tourists as opposed to British. However, the club scene was just beginning to heat up.

Ku – Clubbers headed to KU, which at the time was the world’s largest outdoor discothèque. This hotspot boasted a huge Olympic size swimming pool and Paul Oakenfold started his career here.

Pikes Hotel -In 1983 Wham! filmed their music video for Club Tropicana at Pikes Hotel which is now known as the famous Ibiza Rocks Hotel. This hotel had a reputation in the 80’s and was often associated with the rich and the famous . Freddie Mercury held his birthday party here in 1987, which like Freddie himself was a very lavish and flamboyant affair.

Amnesia – The club Amnesia opened its doors in the late 80’s. This former farmhouse was converted into a club and still pulls in the crowds today. Argentinian DJ, Alfredo was in charge of the club in 1982 and by the late 80’s DJs such as Nicky Holloway, Paul Oakenfold and Danny Rampling belted out tunes by Cyndi Lauper, Talking Heads and Bob Marley. It was these DJs who introduced house music to Europe.

Space – also started in 1989 when Pepe Rosello took over the club. This club is situated in Playa D’en Bossa so offered something for holidaymakers who wanted to visit the club scene, but who weren’t staying in San Antonio, the island’s nightlife capital.

KU was still very popular with the arrival of DJ Pete Tong who was controlling the dance scene at this time. In 1995 the club changed its name to Privilege after new ownership.

Amnesia – Cream and Joseph Mullen took over the club in 1995 and subsequently won the award for Best Global Club from 1996 to 1999. It was still a very important venue for clubbers and would hold more than 5000 people most nights. The place soon became a hotspot with top DJs and celebrities, and was still an open-air club at this time.

Space – In 1991 Alex P started playing chilled house tunes on the club’s roof terrace. In 1993 Brandon Block arrived and this is when Space Terrace was formed. A year later Red Bull was introduced to Ibiza and Space held their launch party, making it a legendary spot for Ibiza’s launch and closing parties.
