What to do in Ialyssos

Life in Ialyssos revolves around its beach. Surrounded by hotels, cafes, restaurants and low-key bars, you can spend the day on its pebbles and enjoy tasty, authentic food and fine facilities. Evenings tend to be quite relaxed, but there's usually always a quiz or karaoke night on. Ialyssos' beach is a firm favourite with windsurfers, who turn up to ride the famous meltemi winds. If you prefer sand to pebbles, take the 10-minute bus journey down the road to Ixia where there's a stretch of sand that's perfect for sunbathers.

If you're after retail therapy, head into Rhodes Town. You'll find an eclectic combination of designer boutiques, souvenir shops and high-street brands, so you can shop til you drop. For the best shops in town, visit Sokratous Street and Mandraki Harbour.

For the adrenalin fans

Whether you're an old hand at windsurfing or want to try it for the first time, Ialyssos is the perfect place for it. You'll find centres on the beach that can help you with kit and lessons. The warm breeze creates perfect conditions for windsurfing, so if it's your first time, you're better off booking a lesson in the morning when the winds are calmer. By the afternoon, the winds have picked up – you'll be flying along the water.

Rhodes Town is a 15-minute journey away, and it's well worth visiting for its medieval sights. Once you enter the fortress walls that surround the town, you'll feel as though you've stepped back in time. It's easy to lose hours wandering the winding, narrow streets – but don't forget to visit the 16th-century Street of the Knights, and the Palace of the Knights. There's also a new part to the city, with modern bars, shops and restaurants.
