Exploring the delicacies of Lefkas

Traditional tavernas serve the freshest catch of the day from their local ports, including specialities like octopus and squid. Savoro is a commonly made dish in Lefkas, which is fresh fish cooked in garlic, onions and rosemary.

You’ll also find mezze style meals with numerous appetiser-sized portions including olives, sun-dried tomatoes and spiced meat dishes as your main. Lefkas has many wine vineyards and is known for producing Bertzami wine which is reputed to the best wine in Greece. Rachi has one of the best views on the island. Located in the small mountain town of Exanthia, it’s about a 20-minute drive from the capital city, but well worth the effort. You can grab a table outside on the large terrace and watch the setting sun – and you’ll also get a stunning view of the seaside. Traditional Greek cuisine is served here, coming full of flavour and local ingredients.

They also serve some very tasty cocktails, so it’s a fantastic spot to head for if you’re looking to extend dinner with a tipple or two.

If you’re in Sivota for a day at the beach you can stop here for a great freshly-baked breakfast or late lunch. One of the top restaurants on the island, this cafe serves up terrific waffles, crepes, pizza and baked goods in addition to breakfast. Located right next to the harbour, they have a shaded outside terrace where you can watch the boats come and go while you dine.

This Greek taverna is fitted with casual and traditional wooden tables and tablecloths, and serves mostly Greek food with some Italian-inspired items on the menu. They serve seafood, Mediterranean and Greek cuisine and they also have vegetarian options including salads and hot dishes.

The Barrel is a very family-friendly establishment overlooking the bay, and children can order off a dedicated menu while watching the boats sail by.

This seaside restaurant specialises in mouth-watering seafood dishes, caught straight from the waters in Vassiliki. Dishes here are always freshly prepared and some of the most popular items on the menu are calamari, octopus and their catch of the day. This restaurant serves generous portions, so make sure to arrive hungry. If seafood isn’t your thing there are also Greek meat dishes on the menu including rabbit stifado and lamb kleftiko.
