Alexander the Great's town

Nostalgia and history are deeply woven into the fabric of Protaras, the Cypriot town said to be built on the site of an ancient battle with a descendant of Alexander the Great. Nowadays, it's a sunny town of fun and relaxation, although close enough to areas like Larnaca and Ayia Napa that you'll never be at a loss for something to do during your Cyprus holidays. The beaches are golden and the town is full of character.

Bask by the bay

From the cosy little nook that is secretive Sirena Bay, to the wet and wild watersports and good times of Fig Tree Bay, the stretches of coastline in this area are said to be why Protaras was built in the first place. It's a tourist town through and through, although never at the cost of its character – and with beaches like this, you won't be complaining.

Sunloungers are scattered beneath perfect clear blue skies, and the heat doesn't stop adventurous spirits from buzzing over the waves on their jet-skis. Stroll further out of town and the countryside is there to entice you to some of the more hidden beaches in the area – you're not going to be at a loss for sunbathing locations any time soon.

Eating out on the avenue

Protaras is peppered with restaurants, and you can be confident that the town can provide whatever your palate calls for. Traditional tasty Cypriot foods are plentiful, together with Greek dishes to entice you – but look around and you'll encounter steak houses, seafood, Chinese dishes, Mexican delights and good old fish and chips. That's before you even consider the Japanese sushi, the Italian home-cooking or the all-out international menus of some of the fusion places.

It's impossible to spend any time in Protaras on an empty stomach with such abundant treats around you, so sit down, grab your cutlery and enjoy.

Sumptuous surroundings

Should you venture beyond the borders of Protaras itself, you're going to find lots of places to explore and discover. There's the famous creamy sands of Cape Greco, which is popular with swimmers and divers who like to get away from the more populated beaches of the area. If you want to sample the traditional Cypriot lifestyle, saunter over to Ayia Thekla, named for its beautiful church – it's a village of old-fashioned values and historic architecture.

Guided tours and walks through exotic flowers are often high on holidaymakers' agendas, especially given the natural beauty of the area. There are more vibrant places to be seen as well, if a down-tempo day isn't your thing – the wild town of Ayia Napa, with its bars, clubs and parties, is just 10 minutes by bus from Protaras.

Relax over drinks

Nightclubs aren't the done thing in Protaras – they leave those to nearby Ayia Napa – although that doesn't mean there's no nightlife at all in the town. Far from it – there are several bars and pubs vying for your attention, each showing sport and sitcoms on big screens while customers laugh and joke together. There's often live entertainment, including tribute acts to the pop-world's greats, not to mention karaoke if you want to have a go for yourself.

Warm weather every day

We hope you're here for the heat, because Protaras doesn't disappoint. If you're visiting during the height of summer, be prepared for temperatures to race above 30°C. The island famously receives around 340 days of sunshine every year, so you're hardly going to have bad luck with the weather during your holiday. What's more, even taking advantage of Cyprus holiday deals in the middle of winter will see you enjoying temperatures around the 15°C mark, which is far more reasonable than the chattering of teeth you'd be tolerating back home.
