Family Holidays to Krabi
The Krabi region of Thailand is a laid-back area that doesn’t have the same wild nightlife as somewhere like Phuket, but offers natural pursuits and exceptional beaches. Families will love exploring some of the 154 islands off the coast, climbing the limestone rocks, bathing with elephants and heading to forest parks.
Best family activities in Krabi
Aside from the excellent stretches of beach and boat trips galore, Krabi has lots to do that the whole family will adore. A popular choice is visiting Thung Teao Forest Natural Park, where you can walk along a three-kilometre nature trail through tropical rainforest. It leads to the hot springs waterfall with natural bath tubs via the Crystal Lagoon and Blue Pool freshwater basins.
There are a couple of great choices for older children to enjoy such as rock climbing, particularly up Railay’s looming limestone cliffs. Krabi Fun Park, between Ao Nang and Krabi Town, is the perfect choice for anyone taller than 120cm, where you can walk across the swinging rope bridges and zipline, or even fly a broomstick. This is close to the Seashell Cemetery, an area of 40-million-year-old fossilised shells that all ages will find fascinating. There’s a small visitor centre or you can hire a guide to find out more.
Many tours give you the chance to bathe with elephants in a river and get squirted by the elephant’s trunk. Or you can hire a long-tail boat or canoes from Ao Luk in northern Krabi province through the mangrove forest to the mysterious Tham Lod and Tham Phi Hua Tho caves.
Krabi Town displays the authentic side of Thailand and a great place to experience this is at its night market, also known as Walking Street. Take the family to biggest of all the night markets in the region and you can browse handmade items such as teddies, art and jewellery, as well as hear musical performances and sample excellent, freshly cooked food.
You can tie this in with a visit to the nearby Tiger Cave Temple, which are natural caves home to monks. Climb the 1,256 steps up the limestone tower to the shrine at the top and relish amazing views, especially at sunrise or sunset.
