From secluded coves to exciting nightlife

The island of Zaknythos is more commonly known by its Italian name, Zante. This unique holiday destination is one of the few places in the world where you can see loggerhead turtles in their natural environment.

Visitors looking for peace, relaxation and the flavour of local life can head to Zante’s secluded golden sand beaches and authentic taverns where the Greek way of life rules and time is immaterial. Be prepared to enjoy long, sleepy afternoons in the sun, snacking on fresh flatbread with locally sourced olive oil.

If you prefer lively nightlife to wildlife, however, the beach village at Laganas plays host to a young crowd; its main street is suitably stacked with restaurants, pubs and clubs that will have you on your feet from dusk ‘til dawn.

Planning a holiday in 2013? Things to do in Zante

Don’t disturb the turtles!
Mediterranean Loggerhead turtles have come to the Bay of Laganas to lay their eggs for over 10,000 years. Up to 2,000 turtles visit this marine park to lay their eggs on summer nights, particularly on the white sandy beach of Sekania.

Take a boat trip to the Blue Caves
On Zante’s north coast, the region of Skinari features stunning rock formations, sea arches and sea caves that reflect light to produce an otherworldly shimmering blue palette. Take a memorable trip in a glass-bottomed boat to view these ancient caves and their crystal-clear waters.

Apokries Carnival
Zante comes alive in February with the Apokries Carnival, which celebrates life through theatre, dance and song. This tradition has taken place since ancient times, when Greeks gods were worshipped ahead of the spring and summer months; in modern day Zante, however, it’s an excuse for a bright and colourful festival that will have you twirling for days.

Whether you’re looking for a Mediterranean family getaway or a romantic break on the beach, Zante is an ideal destination. With a huge range of accommodation on offer, from all-inclusive holiday resorts to quaint B&Bs, this unique Greek island can suit a huge range of budgets and tastes.
