Sunning on the coast

Salou has two main beaches – both of which are European Blue Flag winners – that offer the kind of beautiful, fine sand and stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea that we’ve come to expect from holidays to Costa Dorada. Playa de Llevant beach is a great choice for families as the water remains calm and shallow and the sand is consistently smooth – ideal conditions for splashing around or doing some snorkelling. Playa de Llevant has a long stretch of beach bars and there are also small play areas for children along the promenade.

The second beach in Salou is Playa de Ponent. It’s slightly shorter than Playa de Llevant but still a kilometre long with quaint cafes dotted along the sand, perfect for an ice cold refreshment. If you want to venture further afield the busier tourist hotspot of Cambrils is just up the coast line.

Wild rides

In Salou there is plenty of excitement right on your doorstep, including Spain’s biggest theme park, PortAventura World. The whole family can have fun experiencing 6 themed areas. Come explore Mediterranian, the Far West, Mexico, China and Polynesia, in addition to a Sesame Street section for kids. If you’re a fan of thrills hop on Port Aventura’s most famous ride, Shambhala. It’s the tallest and fastest hyper coaster in Europe. Another one to check out is Dragon Khan, which boasts 8 exhilarating inversions. In addition, you will find Ferrari Land. This is a unique theme park in Europe, where you can enjoy a thrilling experience with the whole family and discover all the secrets behind the legendary Italian brand and its creator, Enzo Ferrari.

If you’re travelling with children, an ideal day trip is to Bosc Aventura. This family-friendly adventure playground in Salou has swings and zip lines between platforms high in the sky – don’t worry, you’ll all be strapped into safety harnesses. Bosc Aventura also has trampolines, paintballing and rock-climbing available.

Nightly entertainment

If you’re after a little evening entertainment, Salou’s famous House of Illusion is perfect for all ages. This mystery theatre includes close-up magic in a pre-theatre parlour show, a variety performance of comedy and laughter, and a journey of manipulation with live mind reading and spectacular sleight of hand. You’ll be blown away by the world-class illusions performed in a beautifully decorated, candlelit theatre.

For a night out on the town during cheap holidays to Salou, check out the Spanish entertainment. Most pubs and bars offer live music with bands performing nightly, including modern tribute acts. For a real treat head to its wide range of clubs and bars. Salou is also extremely popular with its various impersonations of celebrities and delicious and affordable cocktails and drinks.

Dining out

Salou has over 250 places to eat, alongside some of the finest All Inclusive Costa Dorada hotels. With so much choice and variety you’ll find something to tantalise everybody’s taste buds. You’ll find specialities, such as tapas and paella, as well as British pub grub, Italian dishes and much more. If you’re looking for something authentic, head nearer to the beach and try out the numerous seafood shacks that serve up fresh catches each day.

Shop until you drop

Shopaholics flock to the Avenida Jaume I on the promenade, where craft shops and souvenir stores sit along the palm-lined strip. With stunning views of the beach, the promenade is a lovely place for a stroll, and when the fountains illuminate on an evening it becomes the ideal place for a peaceful post-dinner walk. Salou also has two popular traditional markets. Bonavista Market sells a selection of art, ornaments, and trinkets on Sunday mornings and Via Roma sells similar merchandise on a smaller scale on Mondays.

Buzzing neighbour

The cultural city of Barcelona is only 90 minutes away by train. Take a scenic day trip and admire the quirky architecture, explore the historic gothic quarter, wander down the famous Las Ramblas or monkey around at Barcelona Zoo – home to over 400 species of animal from around the world. Stay for the evening and you’ll see the world-famous fountains perform against the backdrop of the National Palace.
