History And Directions For Heathrow Airport
London Heathrow is the UK’s largest airport, the busiest in Europe and the worlds busiest in terms of international passengers using the airport. Around 67 million people pass through Heathrow Airport every year, with around 90 airlines offering flights to over 170 destinations world wide.
London Heathrow officially opened for civilian use in 1946 with a flight to Buenos Aires. The first permanent terminal building was opened in 1955 (now terminal 2) followed shortly afterwards by the Oceanic Terminal (now terminal 3). Terminal 1 was opened in 1968, and Terminal 4 in 1986. Following many years of planning, Terminal 5 finally opened in 2008. Terminal 2 is currently closed for modernisation works and is due to reopen to passengers in 2014.
London Heathrow is located approximately 15miles west of Central London.
Terminals 1 & 3: The terminals are close together at the centre of the airport site. Exit the M4 at junction 4 or the M25 at junction 15 and follow signs for Heathrow Terminals 1 and 3.
Terminal 4: The terminal is in the southern part of the airport site and has a separate entrance. Exit the M25 at junction 14 and follow signs for Heathrow Terminal 4. If you're coming from the M4, leave at junction 4b and follow the M25 south to junction 14.
Terminal 5: The terminal is on the Western Perimeter Road and has its own separate access road, reached from junction 14 of the M25. If you're coming from the M4, exit at junction 4b and follow the M25 south to junction 14.
Travel to Heathrow Airport by coach, National Express and other operators run services from Heathrow to more than 500 destinations. Luxury coaches and buses also connect Heathrow with the national rail network at Feltham, Watford, Woking and Reading.
Getting to Heathrow Airport by rail is easy, just use the Heathrow Express – it’s the fastest option, with a journey time of 15 minutes to or from London Paddington and departures every 15 minutes. Alternatively there’s Heathrow Connect – a stopping service to London, calling at local stations in west London and reaching Paddington in 26 minutes.
London Underground's Piccadilly Line provides the most cost-effective rail route between Heathrow Airport and the capital. - Heathrow has three London Underground stations – one for Terminals 1 and 3, one each at Terminal 4 and Terminal 5
