Heathrow Airport officially opened for civilian use in 1946 with a flight to Buenos Aires. The first permanent terminal building was opened in 1955 (now terminal 2) followed shortly afterwards by the Oceanic Terminal (now terminal 3). Terminal 1 was opened in 1968. Over the last 30 years the growth of London Heathrow as been exceptional, with the extension of London Underground to Heathrow Airport via the Piccadilly Line and in 1998 the inauguration of the Heathrow Express, a direct rail service from London Paddington to Heathrow. London Heathrow Airport is the UK's largest airport, the busiest in Europe and the worlds busiest in terms of international passengers using the airport. In 2006 over 67 million passengers used Heathrow and with this in mind a fifth terminal was opened in March 2008 by the Queen.

London Heathrow is located approximately 15 miles west of Central London. Access for terminals 1, 2, 3 can be found at M4 junction 4, M25 junction 15 and the A4. Travelling to terminal 4 access is gained via the M4 junction 3, M25 junction 14 and the A30. There are two rail links at the Airport via the London Underground Piccadilly Line one for terminals 1, 2, and 3 and another one for terminal 4. Tubes run every 5 minutes for the 50 minute journey. Above ground there is the Heathrow Express (every 15 minutes) from London Paddington. For those travelling by coach National Express operate from Victoria bus Station to the Airport subways linking Terminal 1, 2, 3 and 4.
