Family friendly resort

Families are well catered for here in Costa Caleta. As well as amusement arcades, trampolines, volleyball, pool tables and mini-golf courses, the beach has its own play area. Its sweeping one-kilometre beach is a real hit with visitors, located in a sheltered bay, providing safe bathing in its shallow waters. If you’re planning holidays to Fuerteventura in July or August, the kids can enjoy face painting and a bouncy castle on Costa Caleta’s beach every Friday.

Explore the town centre

Take one of the tree-lined streets that run from the beach into town and you’ll hit the main street, full of bars and restaurants. A short walk south along the coast brings you to the Commercial Centre Atlantico, which sells jewellery, gifts, clothes and electrical goods, has a supermarket and large cinema. You’ll find a Saturday morning market here too, where you can pick up a bargain.

In the grounds of the Commercial Centre you can stroll around the natural lakes alongside the picturesque Fuerteventura Golf Club or step on the course to improve your swing on the 18 holes. Beside the shopping centre is another wonderful beach with lagoon-style bays.

An island base

Positioned in a central location from which you can enjoy the island, in 15 minutes you can be in the midst of the shops and culture in the capital, Puerto del Rosario. For a dose of scenery, travel 40 minutes north to the Corralejo Park with its desert beauty of vast white sand dunes leading to turquoise sea. Costa Caleta is also 50 minutes north of Jandia, which mixes dunes and mountains with a nature reserve teaming with wildlife. If you’re plotting cheap holidays to Fuerteventura, Costa Caleta is perfectly placed to get you even more adventures for your money.

Things to do

For fun days out, Corralejo has the Acua Water Park, which also includes a tennis academy, crazy golf course and go-karting circuit to keep you busy for the whole day. Oasis Park is a sub-tropical zoo and botanical gardens half an hour away in Costa Calma, where you can have hands-on feeding time with the animals, including giraffes and camels.

Follow the signs inland past the town centre to Chipmunk Mountain, named after the cute creatures that live here. Actually Barbary Ground Squirrels, they are so tame that you can hand feed them. The view from this area – more of a hill than a mountain – is worth the trip alone.

If you’re visiting in April, check out the sports fair in nearby Puerto del Rosario, where you can see or try almost any sport imaginable. You could try hand at the traditional island sport of Canarian wrestling or there is also an ice rink and a bungee-jumping facility if that’s more your thing!

Fun in the water

As with the whole of Fuerteventura, Costa Caleta is a great place to try watersports. You can go diving, hire jet skis or learn to windsurf at the water centre on the beach. The east coast also has some particularly good surfing conditions.

You can also take boat trips from the marina to see the dolphins and other marine creatures that are native to these shores. Or for an underwater view, take the submarine – a bright yellow and red glass bottom boat that stands out among the twinkling white boats.

On par for golf

Many come to Costa Caleta just for the golfing experience as it has two top 18-hole golf courses. The Fuerteventura Golf Club boasts a Championship Golf Course, which in 2004 was host to the Spanish Open. Only a little further along the coast is the Golf Club Salinas de Antigua. Both courses offer extensive facilities and views of the ocean, surrounded by lush greenery otherwise rare on the island.
