City of Derry Airport has its roots in the Second World War when the site just outside the village of Eglinton was used by the RAF becoming RAF Eglinton. The site remained a military establishment until the 1950s when much of the land was returned to its original owners. Originally called Londonderry Eglinton Airport, there was limited commercial activity during the 1960s and 1970s. Major development during the 1980s and early 1990s that upgraded all the facilities at the Airport and a name change, to the now familiar City of Derry Airport, saw a huge growth in passengers through the airport. The City of Derry Airport is located approximately 7 miles north east of the city centre with access via the A2. Derry Railway Station is connected to the Airport by a regular bus service.
