History And Directions For City Of Derry Airport

City of Derry Airport has its roots in the Second World War when the site just outside the village of Eglinton was used by the RAF becoming RAF Eglinton. The site remained a military establishment until the 1950’s when much of the land was returned to its original owners. Originally called Londonderry Eglinton Airport there was limited commercial activity during the 1960’s and 70’s. Major development during the 1980’s and early 90’s that upgraded all the facilities at the airport and a name change to the now familiar City of Derry Airport saw a huge growth in passengers through the airport. With the increase in popularity of low cost cheap flights and package holidays, continued growth and an exciting future is forecast for the City of Derry Airport. City of Derry Airport is located approximately 7 miles north east of the city centre with access via the A2. Derry Railway Station is connected to the airport by a regular bus service. There is also a regular bus service to the airport from Foyle Street bus station.
