Overview of Altea

Part of the sunny south-east coast of Spain, the Costa Blanca is the tourist hotspot that keeps on giving. Holidays to Costa Blanca have become known for their guarantee of family-friendly fun, a variety of activities and great value. While you might think that you can’t find a lot of peace and quiet here, there are still some smaller areas to check out. Altea may neighbour the ever-lively Benidorm, but it is different in atmosphere and attitude. Altea is far more laid back and slow paced, focusing on good food, pretty beaches and local culture.

Things to do in Altea

As a fishing village, Altea takes pride in its fresh seafood, so head to one of the seafront restaurants for an indulgent meal. If you’re looking for something more intimate, head into the old town area and experience one of the traditional tapas bars. Speaking of old town, if you scale the steep streets, you can find a wealth of local culture, including the picturesque Virgen del Consuelo Church. The blue domed roof is something of a local landmark, and the works of art inside are breathtaking. Once you’ve finished exploring inside, you can sit in the plaza and enjoy a spot of lunch. Take some well-deserved time to relax on the beach, splash around in the large pool at Cap Negret Hotel or even venture further afield to immerse yourself in the local culture. Whatever you choose to do on your holiday in Altea, you’re sure to make many memories.

Resort Summary

Altea’s a 15-minute drive from upbeat Benidorm, but they couldn’t be more different. In Altea, you’ll experience unspoilt Costa Brava at its finest. The beautiful, medieval town boasts patterned streets, flower-filled alleyways and whitewashed houses.

The old part of Altea is hundreds of years old. It was built on a hill, surrounded by fortified walls, to prevent pirate attacks. You can still see the remains of the old walls surrounding the town. Altea has lots of steep streets and quaint staircases, but you’ll be rewarded with stunning ocean views when you reach the top.

The town’s most iconic building is the Virgen del Consuelo, a church topped with a striking blue and white dome. It’s next to a picturesque, paved square, which is lined with bars, restaurants and cafés. As you wander the alleys of Altea, you’ll find plenty more local tapas bars and one-off boutiques to browse.
