A guide to things to do in Costa Almeria

Even though this area is small it still has some beautiful and interesting places to visit for those in love with the great outdoors and history, as well as a few day trips for children who want some fun outside of the hotel. If you are looking for some things to do in Costa Almeria for the family, or for just as a couple, here is a list of activities to keep you occupied during your trip.

History and landmarks

The historical and cultural landmark of Monumental Ensemble of La Alcazaba is a large Moorish castle with lovely well-kept gardens. Explorers might like to climb to the top of the towers to be rewarded with sweeping views over Almeria, including the city and ocean, as well as a monument of Jesus that has been erected there. Plus, EU citizens get free entry to the castle. The audio tours available will walk you through learning about the historical architecture and buildings you are seeing.

Another enlightening trip in Almeria is to the Museo Refusio de la Guerra Civil. This museum gives tours of the underground tunnels which were built by the Spanish during the civil war. The tour especially demonstrates the way the Spanish civil war affected the people of Almeria, but also how innovative they were as they built a lighting system and hospital underground.

Fun days out for the family

If you’re looking for something the kids will enjoy this holiday visit Roquetas de Mar‘s aquarium, which is the largest in Andalucia. This aquarium is full of weird and interesting sea creatures from different types of tropical fish to piranhas. The aquarium is only a five-minute drive from the town centre and is easily accessible.

Another great day out for the kids is in Almeria’s Oasys Mini Hollywood. This replica of an American western town is complete with a sheriff’s office, saloon, and stables. Watch the western shows played by cowboys on horseback or grab a bite to eat at the saloon while you watch can-can dancing and parrot shows, before jumping on one of the slides down to the swimming pool.

Shop 'til you drop

Paseo de Almeria is a beautiful beachfront promenade in Almeria complete with cafes, restaurants and water features. This tree lined street is exceptionally popular with those who love to shop and has an array of stores and boutiques including well-known brands such as H&M, Zara and Mango. Stroll around this historic section of Almeria and take in the picturesque Mediterranean Sea views you’ll find here.

Nature at its purest

Spend some time taking in the natural beauty of Costa Almeria and its surrounding areas. It’s worth a drive through the Cabo de Gata natural park where you can admire its hilly coasts with expanses of captivating cliffs and gorgeous beaches.

This large park has been kept unspoilt by buildings and is truly a remarkable experience for any nature lovers who want to take in the scenic expanse. If you want to experience some wild life take a trip to Punta Entinas-Sabinar where you can spot over 150 different species of birds along the sand dunes, coastlines, wetlands, and lakes. Make sure to watch out for the pink flamingos that inhabit the salt marshes.
