Have a healing holiday

Igalo is a modern town of resorts and terracotta-topped villas, nestled among awe-inspiring scenery. Behind it rise forested hills and mountain plateaus, and in front gleams the deep-blue Bay of Kotor.

A century ago, Igalo was famous as a health resort. This was due to its mild climate and its mud beach – the mud is said to have healing properties thanks to its rich minerals. Today, people still come to the Igalo Spa Institute seeking cures for their ailments. You can head down to the beach and try a mud mask yourself, or step into your hotel’s spa centre for a range of holistic treats.

Its sandy beach is fringed with greenery and Igalo’s shallow waters make this the perfect spot for swimming with children. The ocean front is lined with cafés and restaurants, where you can repose and refresh after taking a dip.

Explore the historic heart of the area

Stroll down the beautiful seafront promenade that stretches south from Igalo and after a mile or so, you’ll reach the stunning village of Herceg Novi. Built almost 700 years ago, it has a beautiful old town where you can stroll through time-worn stone houses, flower-filled squares and winding alleyways.

One of the most stunning buildings in the old town is the terracotta-domed Savina Monastery, which can be reached via a tree-lined walkway. There’s also an impressive fortress at the top of town, which boasts an amphitheatre that’s still in use today.

You’ll find lots of souvenir shops in the old town, plus elegant outdoor restaurants and lots of ice cream shops. You can easily while away a few hours sightseeing in this beautiful neighbourhood.

See the beautiful Bay of Kotor

Igalo is located on the beautiful Bay of Kotor, a fjord-like bay surrounded by towering mountains and unspoilt villages. Igalo holidays are all about getting out on the water and exploring, and there are a lot of watersports on offer. Snorkelling and scuba diving trips are also available, and elsewhere sailing lessons and kayak hire are on offer. A popular kayaking destination is Rose, a tiny village with an untouched beach.

If you take a speedboat tour, you can travel further afield and explore the entire length of this stunning bay. Popular destinations include the Blue Cave – a grotto renowned for its brilliant turquoise waters – and Perast. This UNESCO-designated medieval town is well known for Our Lady of the Rocks, a unique island church just offshore from Perast.

Take a hike

Igalo is a renowned hiking destination. The hills and mountains around the village and Herceg Novi are crossed with hiking trails. You can follow them upwards from the old town, and routes are clearly marked. If you’re feeling adventurous, head all the way up to Mount Orjen, an ancient stone massif, and weave your way up through forests and fields of wildflowers.

If a hike sounds like too much effort, there are plenty of places that can be reached by car or local bus. One of these is Kotor, a walled town nestled into a hillside. You’ll be captivated by the maze of sloping streets, quaint cobbled squares and its Venetian palace. Explore the town, seeking out local cafés and interesting souvenir shops. Kotor is also renowned for being home to hundreds of cats – perfect if you love furry friends of the feline persuasion.
