Head to Yllaksen Vaellushevoset Oy for a unique trail-riding experience on horseback. If you’re a looking to spot a reindeer, Konijänkä’s Petting Zoo is where you will find them. A fantastic family day out, the zoo also offers sleigh rides, snowmobiles and much more. You can also choose to go dashing through the snow on a husky safari – a fun and speedy way to get around. Sit back and enjoy the epic scenery or take hold of the rails to ride your very own sleigh.

Finnish relaxing

Experience relaxation the Finnish way with this once-in-a-lifetime experience. The only sauna gondola in the world, sit back and relax as you take in jaw-dropping views of the Ylläsjärvi landscape. A cable-car-like sauna experience, three to four people are allowed up at one time, meaning that you can have a peaceful soak in the outside jacuzzi.

A trip to Lake Äkäslompolo brings its very own popular tradition in the form of ice swimming. With locals frequently taking a dip to stay refreshed, it is also believed that the icy waters are good for circulation and give you an exhilarating energy boost. Set on the edge of the lake, take in the mountainous backdrop and keep an eye out for a glimpse of the Northern Lights if you’re lucky.

If you find yourself looking for a bite to eat, Yllas has a wide selection of restaurants, bars and ski cafés. Taste the local delicacies packed full of flavour using traditional Nordic recipes. Roasted, filleted and slow-cooked, reindeer is a popular dish in this region. Cooked in a variety of ways, it is often teamed with fresh mushrooms or berries. With countless lakes in the area, you’re likely to find a great fish selection on the menu – look out for the delicious flavours of Arctic char or whitefish.

With buses and transport operating regularly between the two villages, you don’t need to worry about the choice between Äkäslompolo or Ylläsjärvi. During the high season, between December and March, both the resorts hold incredible live events and music shows to entertain guests.
