Anyone who's looking for a fantastically relaxing resort to enjoy on Dominican Republic holidays will love the chilled out vibe at Playa Dorada. It's a gated resort and one of the older holiday destinations in the area, offering lots of activities and amenities.

For a start there's the stunning long stretch of beach right on the Atlantic Ocean. Diving is just one of the many sports you can try while here. It's an exciting pastime during which you can view the underwater reefs and sea life in this beautiful azure water.

Sports days

The watersports activities don't stop with snorkelling. At Playa el Chaparral, a 25-minute stroll away, there's the opportunity to take up kiteboarding at the Legends Kiteboarding school.

Dedicated adrenaline junkies will find a warm welcome at Caribbean Extreme Sports, part of the Playa Dorada beach and golf club complex. Take up flyboarding and hover over the waves wearing a jet pack – you'll soon discover the exhilaration of this gravity defying experience.

Of course not all sports activities have to induce a rush of adrenaline. Horse riding in the shallows is wonderfully soothing and great fun. Just a five minute drive away from Playa Dorada is the Rancho Salvaje. From here, you can get saddled up and spend a day riding your horse in the sea against the backdrop of the glorious colours of the setting sun.

Other outside fun amenities

With the excellent facilities at Playa Dorada Golf Course, golfing fans are in for many hours of fun. The course was designed by golfing course guru Robert Trent Jones Snr, so you know that you're in for a good time when you attempt to get your hole in one here. Many of the hotels you'll find during All Inclusive holidays to the Dominican Republic boast their own outdoor sporting facilities too.

Fun City at Puerto Plata, just an eight-kilometre drive away from Playa Dorada, is where you can let go and have adventures. Come here to have thrills and spills on the go-karts and bumper cars. You can even try out your baseball pitching skills in the purpose built pitcher cage.

Retail therapy

No cheap holiday in the Dominican Republic would be complete without a shopping opportunity or two and staying at Playa Dorada provides you with lots of choice. Close at hand is the Playa Dorada shopping complex complete with clothes, souvenir and jewellery shops. Amber is something of a speciality in the Dominican Republic and this shopping complex has a specialist amber shop that sells fine examples of the gem.

Plaza Izabela is where you can check out specialist jewellery shops. Harrison's Jewellers is the place to source some iconic platinum work. It's a shop that's popular with celebrities, and is known for its clearance deals, which are always good news.

To really open up your wallet, the Plaza Turisol Complex is a five-minute drive away. This is the best place in the area for designer and upscale articles and has one of the largest selections of shops on the north coast.

Living it large

Playa Dorada is popular for its wide range of nightlife opportunities. It's not just about nightclubs here, you can try your luck by spending an evening at one of several casinos, or practice your dance moves. There are sports bars, Vegas-style extravaganzas, as well as chilled out venues where you can sip a cocktail or too.

You could simply spend you evenings enjoying the wide range of dishes at one of the many restaurants in town. Seafood's in plentiful supply here or you could try some of the more adventurous menus.
