Whichever Canary Island you choose, you can enjoy a wallet friendly holiday
Fly to the Canary Islands in just over four hours from the UK and sunbathing, sightseeing and relaxation awaits.
Located just off the African coast, the islands enjoy mild winters with average temperatures around 17°C up to sizzling summer temperatures of around 24°C, but often higher.
The islands all have their own distinct personalities, with Fuerteventura the most relaxed, providing laid-back resorts and a low-key nightlife. The sandy beaches are glorious and the winds on the island make it perfect for windsurfing. By contrast, Gran Canaria boasts lively coastal resorts, a sprinkling of waterparks and numerous shopping malls alongside sleepy villages and old-world charm.
La Palma, a lesser known Canary Island, is a delight to behold with volcanic landscapes, vineyards and pine forests ensuring the entire island has been declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve. It offers an escapist retreat for those in search of peace and tranquility, as well as excellent stargazing conditions.
Over in Lanzarote are lunar-like landscapes and modern resorts, and options for hiking and fishing. For those who like their holidays bold and beach-based, Tenerife is just the ticket. With a mix of black sand and imported sand beaches, diverse resorts and a varied nightlife, it promises a lively break.
Cheap days out in the Canary Islands
In Fuerteventura, Corralejo Natural Park is a sublime swathe of sands originally from the Sahara, which provides a seemingly-endless spot for picnics, bathing and surfing.
The scenic landscapes of Gran Canaria also provide plenty of scope for active pursuits that won’t cost a penny – the Maspalomas Sand Dunes, all 400 hectares of them, are a delight to explore in all their undulating glory and can be reached by car in around 20 minutes from Puerto Rico.
Los Cancajos in La Palma offers an array of beaches and day trip options. And the capital, Santa Cruz, with it’s cobbled and colonial style buildings, can be reached by bus in around 10 minutes.
Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park is a day out and a half. With jaw-dropping craters, volcanic peaks and a visitor’s centre to tell you about the history of the area, it’s simply not to be missed, and can be reached from Puerto del Carmen in about 30 minutes by car.
And, not only is Costa Adeje in Tenerife within easy reach of Teide National Park, but it has an array of historic sites to enjoy. Just an hour and half drive away is the delightful 15th-century city of San Cristobal de la Laguna, where you can take a moment of quiet contemplation in the imposing cathedral.
