An adventure seeker’s playground
Wagrain holidays just have that ‘wow’ factor, whether it’s as you look out at the views or as you’re cycling down the windy roads breathing in the fresh air. Between April and October you’ll enjoy temperatures from around 14°C all the way up to the mid 20s, then in those winter months the temperatures will sit below 10, and go as little as 1°C – so make sure to bring your hat in winter! The spring and autumn is when you’ll find rainfall is at its lowest, so if you’re looking for plenty of hikes and cycling in the sunshine, this will be your best bet. Either way, the weather is perfect all year round for all kinds of adventure!
Getting out and about
Come rain or shine, the scenic views of Wagrain will be what gets you outdoors all day, every day. It may only be small, but Wagrain is incredibly rich in natural beauty and it simply has to be explored.
Whether you like to adventure on foot or on two wheels, even paragliding through the air, holidays in Wagrain have it all. There’s 230 km of walking trails around lakes, through alpine meadows and beautiful woodlands, and of course via restaurants and cafes.
Grafenberg is a mountain peak that gives you a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding areas, and if walking one way is enough, there’s a cable car that will take you up or down the mountain.
What’s more, if you’re on two wheels, the Wagrain Bike Park is a must-visit. There’s several different bike trails here, all varying to different levels of experience and difficulty, but all give you that all-important adrenaline rush.
All this adventure may make you break a sweat, so how about a dip in a beautiful alpine lake? Tappenkarsee is entirely surrounded by luscious greenery and scenic views and makes the perfect spot for a refreshing dip, or even a little boat trip.
History and culture
Wagrain may have a lot of greenery but that’s not all there is to this beautiful town. In fact, it was once the home to one of Austria’s most famous writers and poets, Karl Heinrich Waggerl. Head to the Waggerl Haus Museum to learn all about him, his fascinating life and incredible work.
If you’re in Wagrain at the right time (usually September) then you’ll have the opportunity to experience the Harvest Festival. During this week the people come together in celebration, and vast events are packed into the seven days. From markets and hikes to music and themed evenings, you can get stuck in and experience the magic. Plus, there’s always a huge focus on the local produce so there will be plenty of new things to try. It can be a great time to experience and learn something new and so much fun for a family day out.
Local delights
Austrian cuisine is known for its tender meats and smoked cheeses, as well as sweet treats like strudels and refreshing cider – and there are some delicious restaurants in Wagrain that will offer these delights.
Almonte 96 is a charming and cosy restaurant with a relaxing environment, perfect for a visit after a day full of exploring. All the veg and meat served here comes from within Austria and the fish from their local waters, so it’s all ingredients from the region itself. Juicy steaks, cheese dumplings and pumpkin soup are just a few of the dishes you can tuck right into.
For a different corner of the world, Joe’s Pub has a mixed menu of Austrian and Mexican dishes, so you can enjoy anything from cheeseburgers to pasta and even BBQ ribs. There’s always some form of entertainment going on here, whether it be live music or fun events, it’s the perfect place for a celebration.
If you’re looking to grab a drink and unwind, The People’z is a great pick with its relaxing atmosphere and tasty tipples – plus, it’s right in the middle of the village so it’s easy to get to.
