History And Directions For Humberside Airport
Humberside Airport was opened in 1941 as an RAF base, RAF Kirmington, being home to 166 squadron of Lancaster bombers till the end of World War Two in 1945. It was then abandoned till 1974 when the local council reopened the Kirmington site. Following local government re-organisation the site became known as the now familiar Humberside Airport, lengthening the main runway in 1992 to allow for the operation of much larger aircraft. A continued growth, expansion and increase in passenger turnover throughout the 1990s has given Humberside Airport strong foundations to prosper in the future and the ability to compete against the larger airports of the UK.
Humberside Airport is located approximately 10 miles west of Grimsby and 15 miles south of Kingston –upon- Hull. Located off the main A18 trunk road, the airport is just three miles from Junction 5 of the M180. The Stagecoach X1 'Humber Flyer' operates between Hull, Humberside Airport and Grimsby, and the nearest railway station, Barnetby, is just three miles from the airport and offers regular services to Doncaster.
