History And Directions For East Midlands Airport
East Midlands Airport is the 12th busiest airport in the UK and being centrally located means that it is easily accessible from towns and cities throughout the UK. It has grown from strength to strength since the introduction of low cost airlines in 2002, and now serves over 80 different destinations throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
East Midlands Airport was originally an RAF base, “RAF Castle Donington” but was decommissioned in 1946. A local government consortium purchased the site to invest and expand; it was renamed East Midlands Airport and opened in 1965. The airport was not an instant success but this would change with an increase in freight traffic resulting in the extension of the runway and terminal.
East Midlands Airport is located within a 30 mile radius of Nottingham, Leicester and Derby. There is road access via Junctions 23a & 24 of the M1. Railway stations at Loughborough, Nottingham and Long Eaton are located a short bus ride away. There are regular coach services to the airport from all the major cities in the Midlands.
