Doncaster Airport Information & Directions

Doncaster Airport, also known as Doncaster Robin Hood Airport, first opened as an RAF base, RAF Finningley in 1941, being a command base for bombers during the Second World War and the Cold War. The Airport was closed in 1996 as a military base but was reopened in April 2005 as a commercial Airport and just over a year later had handled over 1 million passengers, with continued expansion forecast for the future. The official name of the Airport is Robin Hood Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which was chosen after a little controversy. The idea was that the name would raise a lot of attention and be a fantastic marketing opportunity!
Doncaster Airport is located approximately 6 miles south east of the city centre and 18 miles from Sheffield. Located close to the M18, there is no direct link but the Airport is also close to the M1, M62 AND A1(M). A planned link at Junction 3 of the M18 is expected to be completed in 2010. Doncaster station is a major UK rail link with several direct bus links to the Airport and there is an hourly bus service from Doncaster city centre to the airport.
