Airport Information & Directions for Glasgow Airport

Glasgow Airport opened in 1932 as an RAF base at Abbotsinch near Paisley in Renfrewshire and in 1943 it was handed over to the Royal Navy and became a stone frigate, HMS Sanderling. In 1960 Glasgow Corporation decided the city needed a new Airport and the original site was to have been 3 miles east of Abbotsinch, however the site at Renfrew was closed and Abbotsinch was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth 2nd on June 27th 1966. It has since rapidly expanded to become the largest and busiest Airport in Scotland and the 6th largest in the UK.
Glasgow Airport lies approximately 8 miles west of the city centre with easy access from junction 28 of the M8 motorway. A regular bus service to and from the city centre is available. There is a rail link available from Paisley Gilmour Street station, which is situated 1 mile from Glasgow Airport terminal with connections to Glasgow city centre. A new rail link is due to be completed in 2009 when four trains an hour will run from the Airport to Glasgow Central.
