Belfast International Airport or “Aldergrove” as it is affectionately known began life as a Royal Flying Corps training base during the First World War. By 1934 the site had become a civil Airport but with the breakout of the Second World War was again under the command of the RAF. During the war the RAF had used Nutts Corner but with its variable wind conditions reverted back to Aldergrove after the war. Operations were transferred back to a civilian Airport in 1963 and the first regular jet service began in 1966, passing the 1 million passenger mark in 1969. Three decades on Belfast is now the principal Airport of Northern Ireland with over 4 million passengers passing through the terminal each year.
