History And Directions For Belfast City Airport

Originally known as Sydenham Airport the site was opened in 1937, and the airport was requisitioned by the RAF at the start of the Second World War. The Sydenham airfield remained under military supervision until the 1970’s. It was officially opened to commercial flights in 1983 under the name of Belfast Harbour Airport and then Belfast City Airport. With the increase in popularity of cheap flight package holidays the airport continued to flourish and changed its name again in 2006 to George Best Belfast City Airport in memory of the immortal footballer from East Belfast.

The airport is located on the A2, Sydenham Bypass road, those approaching Belfast on the M1 or M2 should follow the signs to Belfast City Airport, leading to the A2 via the M3. A shuttle bus service operates between the airport terminal and the adjacent rail halt at Sydenham. Translink operates a twice-hourly rail service on weekdays to Central and Victoria Street Stations. The Airport Express 600 operates every 20 minutes from outside the airport to the heart of the city.
