The Sweet Spot for Holiday Savings? It Could Be Just Three Weeks Before You Fly!

If you’ve always believed that booking your holiday as early as possible guarantees the best price, you might be surprised by what we’ve discovered.

At Holiday Hypermarket, we analysed more than 35,000 bookings to see how holiday prices changed depending on when customers booked. And the results were eye-opening: those who booked their holiday between 15 and 30 days before departure saved an average of £462 compared to travellers who booked the exact same holiday more than four months in advance.

That’s nearly 20% less for the same hotel, departure date, duration and party size.

Why Timing Matters

Holiday prices aren’t fixed. Tour operators and hotels regularly adjust prices throughout the year based on demand, availability and market conditions. That means while some holidays can sell out and increase in price, others can become even better value closer to departure as operators look to fill remaining availability. For travellers who have a little flexibility, this can create some fantastic opportunities to save.

The Numbers Behind The Savings

When we compared like-for-like holidays, here’s what we found:

  • 15-30 days before departure: average saving of £462
  • 31-60 days before departure: average saving of £247
  • 61-120 days before departure: average saving of £144
  • All of these booking windows outperformed holidays booked 121+ days before travel

The biggest savings were found in that 15-30 day window, making it the standout sweet spot for value-conscious holidaymakers.

So, Should You Always Book Last Minute?

Not necessarily. Booking early still comes with plenty of benefits. If you’re tied to school holiday dates, travelling as a larger group, or have your heart set on a particular hotel or room type, booking ahead can offer peace of mind and greater choice. But if your destination is flexible, your dates aren’t set in stone, and you’re happy to jump on a great deal when it appears, waiting a little longer could pay off.

What Makes Last Minute Deals So Attractive?

Beyond the savings, booking closer to departure can add a little excitement to holiday planning. Many travellers enjoy browsing the latest offers, discovering destinations they hadn’t considered before, and snapping up premium hotels at prices that may not have been available months earlier. It’s one of the reasons last minute holidays remain so popular with savvy travellers looking to maximise their holiday budget.

Finding Your Perfect Balance

The reality is there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to booking holidays. Some travellers value certainty and choice, while others prioritise finding the very best deal. The good news is that both approaches can work depending on your circumstances. Our latest research simply shows that for those with flexibility, there can be some remarkable savings available in the final few weeks before departure.

So next time you’re thinking about a getaway, it might be worth keeping an eye on those late deals. Your dream holiday could be waiting just around the corner, along with a few hundred pounds in savings.
