An Insider Look Into A 5* Maldives Getaway

When you think of a luxury getaway with 5* service, facilities and rooms as standard, it’s hard not to think of the stunning Maldives. Thanks to the beautiful location and huge collection of islands, jaw dropping views, beach-front villas and over-water bungalows can be found everywhere you look.

If you want to splash out and live the high life during your holiday to the Maldives, here are our top tips for that perfect 5* experience.

Getting to Your Hotel

As the Maldives are a collection of islands, once you reach Malé International Airport, depending on which resort you’re staying at, you’ll be taken to a seaplane or speedboat to get you there. While you wait, each resort has their own lounge area so you can relax and enjoy some refreshments before boarding your plane or boat to get to your resort.

The islands that are the furthest away from the airport are usually reached by seaplane, and the closest ones by speedboat, to ensure your journey is as comfortable as possible.

Overwater Bungalows

When you think about ultimate luxury in the Maldives, it’s hard to not think of the fantastic collections of overwater bungalows with endless views out across the ocean. Nevermind having your own posh hotel room, an overwater bungalow is the best way to enjoy your holiday in style, with plenty of space in your suite to relax and enjoy the views.

Overwater villas usually come with spacious verandas which are perfect for soaking up the rays during the daytime. As the villas are usually a little way from the main resort, guests are often given bicycles to use throughout their stay, meaning they can explore the island much easier and enjoy riding along the boardwalk to their luxury rooms.

Some of our favourite overwater spots are the Hard Rock Hotel Maldives, staying in the Platinum Overwater Pool Villa, the TUI BLUE Olhuveli Romance, staying in the Over Water Villa with Sea View, Private Pool and Terrace and the Lily Beach Resort & Spa, staying in the Over Water Deluxe Villa with Sea View, Large Terrace and Whirlpool Bath.

Fabulous Facilities

Thanks to the luxury label that Maldives holidays have rightfully earned, you can find a wide range of facilities in your room, villa or water bungalow that aren’t usually found at conventional hotels. For the days that you might not want to venture outside, you can select rooms that have plenty of indoor facilities to keep you entertained, including whirlpool baths.

Many of the resorts also offer great perks like in-room drinks optics or all-inclusive mini bars to keep you hydrated from the comfort of your own luxurious bungalow. If you’re celebrating a special occasion, you can call ahead to your resort and make requests for your favourite tipple to be stocked in your room so you can enjoy on arrival! We would love a chilled bottle of champagne and some fresh strawberries waiting for us in our own beautiful overwater bungalow, what a perfect way to start a dreamy getaway!

To top it all off, your amazing overwater bungalow can come with exciting extras to make sure you really holiday in style. Depending on which resort you choose to stay in, you can expect to see some features like your own private pool on the veranda looking out to the ocean, or a wet and wild waterslide which leads you down for a cooling dip in the calm waters.

Exciting Activities

As you can imagine, thanks to the Maldives’ sea-front location, water-based activities are always on the agenda! With huge expanses of water to explore, there’s no surprise that scuba diving is one of the most loved activities in the Maldives. The North and South Ari Atolls are home to many of the best dive sites in the Maldives, and are known for their clear blue waters and accessibility. Lots of hotels and resorts have scuba and snorkelling equipment that you can borrow, but make sure you check beforehand otherwise you might need to bring your own.

Did you know that in the Maldives, 5 out of 7 sea turtle species can be found, including the Loggerhead, Leatherback and Olive Ridley? The Green Sea Turtle and the Hawksbill Turtle are the most frequently spotted year-round in Vilamendhoo. Thanks to Lhaviyani Atoll’s large sea turtle population, there’s plenty of spots where you can snorkel or dive with these ancient, graceful creatures and learn more about the importance of their conservation.

If you’d be up for a spot of fishing on holiday, many hotels and resorts throughout the Maldives islands have fishing boats that guests are able to take out on a trip and test their skills. Each fishing boat is manned by a qualified skipper, who has expert knowledge of all the best spots for a catch. You can choose to go out with a group of other like minded fishermen and women or you can charter a boat just for yourself and your family, with your expert skipper, at an extra cost.
