Only a little over four hours from UK airports, Lanzarote awaits

Setting foot in Lanzarote, you'll wonder if you're really in the Canaries or if you've somehow landed on the moon.

The island's lunar-like landscape, volcanic beaches and the incredible, rusty red peaks of the Timanfaya National Park are a feast for your eyes and ensure you're always occupied here, no advance planning required. On top of this, there are a wealth of activities geared toward holidaymakers of all ages – theme parks for little ones, bars for older ones and beaches for everybody in between – so no matter who you've got in your gang, everyone'll be taken care of.

Puerto del Carmen is the most popular resort on Lanzarote, and comes equipped with the best nightlife on the island. It's also home to the aptly-named Playa Grande beach, along with a long shopping avenue and the Wild West-themed zoo Rancho Texas Lanzarote Park. All you've got to do for a good time here is just turn up. Costa Teguise offers similar on-the-fly activities and is known for its watersport potential, along with Lanzarote's only waterpark, the aptly-named Aquapark.

Playa de Los Pocillos, on the other hand, is all about those low key vibes, where all you have to do is kick back and relax for enjoy its easy-going shores. Here, you'll find a small, sheltered beach and a supremely strollable waterfront promenade that connects the resort with its neighbours.

The best time of year to book your last minute holiday

Lanzarote is a classic winter sun destination with year-round warmth, so 'low season' isn't really a thing here.

There are generally two distinct seasons that are especially popular among holidaymakers – between November and April, as Lanzarote's eternally warm weather is a great escape from the cold, and the typical summer months of July and August. If you want to avoid crowds, you're best off booking around the busier months, and you'll still see ample amounts of sunshine. But if it's high season on the cheap that you're after, it's best to hold off on booking until a minimum of eight weeks in advance for top last minute deals. This will leave you beginning to look in either May or September.
