Las Vegas is full of surprises and one of these is how many things you can see and do for free. From live music performances and exhibitions to places to sit surrounded by nature we've put together some of the top free things to do in and around town.

Take the kids on an Anderson Dairy Tour

The Anderson Dairy was established in 1907 and is of the oldest family-owned businesses in Las Vegas.

For a complete change from the glitz the kids can go on a Barnyard Buddies Tour complete with talking animals and farm scenery to find out about the dairy and how it works.

Watch an erupting volcano

Located in front of the Mirage hotel you can watch a volcano erupt with huge flames of shooting fire, water plumes, sounds and lighting effects. The show happens every 30 minutes from 5pm to 11pm daily.

See the amazing Bellagio Fountains

Located outside the Bellagio Hotel this spectacular fountain show features high water jets and lights set to songs by people like Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli. Shows run regularly every day from 3pm to midnight.

Enjoy the street-shows in Fremont Street

Take a trip to Fremont Street and you'll see an ever changing programme of fresh and innovative street performers, artists and musicians. But look up and you'll also be wowed by the vast canopy displaying a light and sound show that continues along Fremont Street for four blocks.

Watch the Fall of Atlantis drama

If you're anywhere near the Forum Shops at Caesars you can see the animatronics come to life and the drama of the Fall of Atlantis unfold. It has bright lights with a thoroughly pantomime feel and there's a fire-breathing dragon at the end. It's simple fun for all the family.

Take a moment to relax with flamingos

The Flamingo Wildlife Habitat offers a peaceful haven in the middle of the bustling city. Covering 15 acres in the grounds of The Flamingo Hotel, it's filled with real hot pink flamingos as well as swans, hummingbirds, pelicans and parrots.

Be amazed by the Bellagio Conservatory and Botanical Gardens

This is garden design Las Vegas style, so expect spectacular, colourful, larger-than-life displays. It takes 120 gardeners, engineers and designers to create the amazing fresh flower displays, which are regularly re-designed throughout the year so there's always something new to see.

Watch the sky light up with the Swarovski Starburst

If you love all things big and sparkly head to Bally's to see the spectacular Swarovski Starburst. Every night at 9pm and midnight the huge Swarovski Starburst globe drops over 16 metres and throws out its dazzling glow. With 911 crystals and 1,800 LED lights it's a truly glittering spectacle.

Join in the fun of a Venetian Carnival

Over at the glitzy Venetian Hotel are live performances of a Venetian Carnival show complete with elaborate costumes. You can enjoy 15-minutes of Italian opera and folk music along with a crowd full of gondoliers, living statues and jugglers swaying on stilts.

Check out some Hard Rock memorabilia

Take a tour of music history in the lobby of the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino with their unique collection of memorabilia. Items include clothes worn by Prince and Madonna, a Def Leppard drum kit and special exhibitions dedicated to bands such as Imagine Dragons, who hail from Las Vegas.

Get the Lucky Cat to tell your fortune

Put your hand on the paw of the big Lucky Cat at the Cosmopolitan Hotel and he'll tell your fortune. Handing out a fortune cookie message, which may or may not be completely accurate, you'll also get vouchers for drinks or hotel rooms, so you really can't lose.
