Stunning beaches, historic sites and nightlife to suit every pocket
With a flight time of around four hours and a range of budget-friendly hotels, some just a short walk from a sandy beach, it’s little wonder that the Izmir region is so popular for a cheap getaway. As well as beautiful beaches, explore the many historical sites or haggle at Kusadasi’s local market.
Seferihisar is the first town in Turkey to receive the title of Slow City, meaning it has preserved its heritage, traditional buildings and cuisine for all to enjoy. It also has less traffic so you are encouraged to walk along the cycle paths and seaside routes – an activity that can be enjoyed without having to splash cash.
Cheap days out in Izmir
To get further afield, Dolmus buses are a cheap way to explore this region. A trip to Ephesus, one of the oldest and best-preserved Roman settlements, with columns and an amphitheatre, is a must. There are three waterparks close to Kusadasi And for a completely free and utterly relaxing day, Seferihisar has the most Blue Flag beaches in Turkey.
Or explore Izmir City, which has several historic monuments and museums. Izmir’s Synagogue Street is a colourful collection of stalls where you can barter for fruit and veg or a local souvenir. And the west-facing coastline here is perfect for watching the sun set into the Aegean Sea at one of the many restaurants that line the scenic harbour. Another affordable day out is the Wildlife Park in Izmir City, with elephants and zebras.
