When you fly back from certain countries, such as the Dominican Republic, you need to pay a departure tax. Sometimes this is included in the cost of your holiday, it depends completely on the tour operator. To avoid extra expense, ensure this is the case before departure.
Make sure have the exact money ready at the airport. It costs 20US$ and needs to be paid at the airport on departure. Even though the local currency is pesos this amount is usually preferred in US dollars.
However, if you only have local currency on you, the conversion rate means it will come to approximately 920 Dominican Republic pesos, which translates to approximately £11 per person.
It's worth noting children under two are excluded from having to pay, as are government or airport officials who are on duty.
