How to find cheap holidays
The key to finding a cheap holiday is knowing where to look, when to book and how to stay flexible – small changes can lead to big savings!
1. Be flexible with your dates
If you want a cheap holiday, flexibility is everything.
- Prices can vary massively depending on when you travel, so if you can, avoid peak times like school holidays and bank holidays as these are when demand is highest.
- Aim for off-peak or shoulder season travel – between May to early June, or September into October.
- Even changing your departure by a day or two can make a huge difference.
2. Book last minute
Getting the timing right when you book can help you make savings and make payments easier.
- With a last minute holiday you can make savings from the get go as prices tend to be reduced around 8 to 12 weeks before departure, so that airlines and hotels can fill spaces
- Holiday Hypermarket adds on exclusive online discounts onto last minute holidays so you can get an amazing steal
3. Or, book ahead to spread out the payments
Booking in advance can be a handy trick for spreading out the payments for your holiday.
- Usually, your holiday balance needs to be paid around 12 weeks before your departure, so if you book far in advance, you can make several, small payments overtime
- Booking ahead can also help you to get your first choice of destination, flight times, room types and more!
4. Compare everything
Comparing options can help you find the best value deal so you can get the msot out of your money.
- Compare different destinations – some places tend to always be cheaper, e.g. Turkey or Morocco
- Check different dates – even flying one day earlier can make a huge difference
- Look at alternative airports – a different airport that’s not too much further might be cheaper
- Keep track of our discount codes and offers to never miss a good deal!

Overall, staying flexible and doing your research are both key to finding a really cheap holiday!
Holidays can often be the cheapest when booked last minute. This is because hotels and airlines lower their prices for rooms and seats that have not sold yet – typically those within the next 8 to 12 weeks.
Booking a last minute holiday tends to mean you need to be as flexible as possible with your destination, departure airport and dates as availability is less – but if this is easy for you, there’s plenty of great cheap holiday packages to be had!
On the other hand, booking in advance means you’re more likely to get first pick for your hotel and preferred room type. Flights are often the first things to sell out too, so booking in advance can mean you’re more likely to get your preferred dates and times.
Another positive of booking in advance is that often you can spread out your payments rather than pay it in one sum – like you would have to with a last minute holiday. Although this may not mean it’s cheaper, it can be a lot easier to manage.

The cheapest months to go on holiday can vary depending on the destination.
- peak times: when holidays are typically most expensive
- off peak times: when holidays are typically cheapest
- shoulder season: the weeks between the peak and off peak season when a bargain can be found
Often peak tourism times cause holiday prices to increase – most commonly in the school holidays and from mid June to the end of August. If you have children at school it can be hard to avoid these months but we’ve got plenty of school holidays deals to make your money stretch further.
The off peak season tends to sit between November and March and is when you’ll typically find the cheapest holiday deals. Destinations that are a bit further away are most popular so that you can still enjoy the warm weather, e.g., Canary islands, Morocco, Cape Verde.
There is also the shoulder season which runs from April to mid June and then between September and October as well – it’s the time between the peak and off peak season. It’s a great time to find cheap holidays and warm temperatures even in Europe.
For long haul holidays, e.g. the Caribbean, Florida or Thailand, the off peak and peak seasons are opposite. This means the cheapest long haul holidays will usually be in the summer months, while prices increase across the winter months.
