I went on my holidays to the Dominican Republic back in 2005. We were just a party of two and stayed at a five grade property in Punta Cana called the ‘Sirenis Cocotal’. The first thing we noticed from the sky was how beautifully green and transparent the sea looked against the white Caribbean sands. Our flight was long, but it was comfortable. We flew with Frist Choice and had loads of leg room and leather seats even though we were in economy class. From the moment we stepped aboard the place, I knew this was going to be a really enjoyable and unforgettable holiday.
However, the first day gave me a different impression. We went down for breakfast and were shocked at the quality of the food. For a 5* hotel it served cold beans and rock hard bacon or toast. We gave it the benefit of the doubt, hoping it would improve for the rest of the week. Unfortunately, it didn’t. Also, that night we sat in the lobby bar as the shows in the hotel were terrible, really bad dancers and singers. This became routine for us, and some nights we just stayed in our room and took advantage of the free mini bar, as we were starving. We didn’t venture out as the locals carried guns which you could clearly see from afar.
We had very relaxing days though, even though we stayed by the pool. The hotel grounds were stunning and well kept, with gardeners always around working hard. I do wish we had gone out of the resort, because I would’ve liked seeing some of the Dominican’s culture and see a very exotic place. We were just far too apprehensive of the local people though.
I was so glad we only went for a week. I would definitely go back to the Caribbean. I do want to experience a taste of their lifestyles, but I’d just go to a different place and stay with a different chain of hotels.
