Enjoy the warm Spanish sun and save some cash with cheap holidays to Costa del Sol

Flights to Malaga Airport take less than three hours and you'll often get your transfer included. You can be in the popular holiday destinations of Benalmadena and Fuengirola to the west in around 35 minutes, or head an hour east to Nerja.

If you're looking for a beach-laden holiday, opt for a stay in Nerja, where the 10 beaches cover just about every waterfront base, from volcanic to secluded, watersport-laden and classic beauties. While walks up to the Balcon de Europa – the 'balcony of Europe' – and down into the caves keep your holiday varied but affordable here.

Meanwhile, for culture, Benalmadena is split into three unique areas with three distinct faces – the old village, seafront and centre. Overall, it's the perfect waterfront resort with a space to match every budget.

Finally, Fuengirola may look like a glitzy holiday hotspot on the outside, but it's a budget-friendly resort at heart with a seven-kilometre stretch of sand, a Medieval Moorish fortress known as Sohail Castle and a waterfront promenade connecting it all.

Cheap days out in Costa del Sol

Everywhere in Costa del Sol has beaches ready for you to flop down on, with Fuengirola and Benalmadena boasting 15 kilometres of sand between them, and Nerja serving up 10 different beaches. But aside from the beaches, there are plenty more cheap options for things to do.

Benalmadena is an interesting place to just walk around and take in the sights, particularly the glistening white marina, the old village quarter and the sprawling Parque de la Paloma complete with palm trees, bamboo, birds and rabbits to spot.

Similarly, Nerja has the beautiful viewing point dubbed the Balcon de Europa and you could wander around the Tuesday market to pick up some bargains. Plus kids will love a ride on the tourist train that leaves from near Plaza Cavana.

Walking along Fuengirola's Paseo Maritimo Promenade is an activity in itself as it's dotted with sculptures and old photographs of the area. There's also a kids' funfair and beach playground to stop off at. Walk further and you'll reach Sohail Castle on a hill looking over the river estuary – it's free to visit and the views are far-reaching.
