Resort Summary

The ancient city of Naxos was founded by the Greeks almost three millennia ago, and has a turbulent history. It was attacked by the Syracusans and the inhabitants were sold as slaves, before being rebuilt. You’ll find both prehistoric and Ancient Greek remains in and around Giardini Naxos.

The Archeological Park is where you’ll find the ancient ruins of the old Greek city. It stretches from the seafront, along the Schisò Cape and up to the popular resort of Taormina. Scattered among lemon groves are the remains of destroyed houses, alongside the ruins of sacred buildings and the old city walls. There’s also an archaeological museum near the complex, where you’ll find interesting artefacts discovered on excavations.

Giardini Naxos also boasts several spectacular medieval buildings. Schisò Castle is an imposing fortress casting a shadow over Cape Schisò, the headland where Ancient Naxos was built. You can learn more about the region’s history and enjoy some contemporary art displays.
