What's the weather like in Rhodes?

Located southwest of mainland Greece, Rhodes is not only the largest of the Greek islands but its also the sunniest. Rhodes boasts over 300 days of sunshine a year and is home to a warm Mediterranean Climate of long hot summers and mild wet winters.

Budding spring

Make way for the sunshine, Rhodes leaves winter behind and starts gearing up for it busiest time of the year.

Spring is a perfect time to visit, as like autumn, it has warm weather with less of the crowds. Between March and May you'll see average temperatures of 17°C and highs up to 23°C.

If you visit in May you'll see 12 hours of sunshine everyday, and with all that sunshine comes warm sea temperatures, with the water steaming up to around 19°C. Rainfall also starts to diminish, but bear in mind that spring isn't a stranger to the occasional thunderstorm or heavy downpour.

Sizzling summer

June to September are Rhodes' busiest months and also the hottest. Temperatures average around 28°C during the day and around 21°C at night. There's no denying this time of year is hot, so make sure to bring plenty of sun lotion as well as a good hat to protect you from the rays.

Rhodes can see around 14 hours of sunshine a day between June and July, which is perfect for epic beach trips, waterpark adventures and sightseeing around historical monuments. Rain is mostly unheard of here, but you will feel a welcoming cool breeze coming off the ocean.

If you're staying on the north side of the island, remember that it might be slightly cooler than the south and temperatures usually drop between 10 and 20 degrees in the evening.


Autumn loving

If you're one of the lucky few who don't have to worry about booking over summer holidays, Autumn is an ideal time to visit Rhodes.

Temperatures are still warm with averages of 21°C and the beaches and resorts are a lot less crowded. October sees around nine hours of sunshine a day and November eight, and with highs of 24°C you're still looking at ideal beach weather.

The one thing to keep in mind if you do travel in the autumn is that you're likely to see an increased amount of rain. The most common type of precipitation is a thunderstorm, this might last for an hour or two but will quickly disappear back into sunshine.

Quiet Winters

The winter season in Rhodes lasts between December and February and sees averages of 13°C. Winter is still a fairly popular time to visit Rhodes, as compared to other places is Europe it is positively balmy.

You'll see around seven hours of sunshine a day, so you'll have plenty of time to do a bit of sight-seeing or outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. December tends to be Rhodes' wettest month and it's likely that you'll see a few gloomy days if you stay over this period.

It's good to be aware that winter is Rhodes' off season, so some of the restaurants and bars may be closed. Do some research into the city you're staying in before you book, so you're not left disappointed.

If you're more interested in checking historical sights than sun-tanning at the beach, winter might be an ideal time for you, especially since you can find some fantastic deals on cheap Rhodes holidays at this time.

Of course it's always a good idea to bring a jumper whatever season you travel, and most importantly don't forget that sun tan lotion.
