The Ultimate Guide to Birmingham Airport

Birmingham Airport is among the busiest in the UK, and in 2014 sent 9.7 million people packing. Our ‘Ultimate Guide to Birmingham Airport’ is here to give you the lowdown on what to expect if you fly from this West Midlands holiday hub.

Getting to Birmingham Airport is pretty straightforward as it’s located on several primary routes, making a journey by car relatively easy. Birmingham Airport also has its own train station connected to lines throughout the UK, with a free monorail that links the station to the terminal, so getting to your terminal on time couldn’t be easier.

With so much to do in the airport, why not start your holiday early and take advantage of the duty-free areas or treat yourself to an early morning snack in one of the many eateries available? Whether you want to book into a hotel the night before you fly, relax in one of the airport lounges, or do some extra holiday shopping, Birmingham is a modern and well-equipped airport.

Hotels

Take the stress out of your journey by travelling to the airport the day before. With a good range of hotels on offer to suit every type of traveller, from the budget conscious to those who like to splash the cash, you’re sure to find what you’re looking for at Birmingham Airport. Ibis Hotel is a budget hotel, but with a fantastic location, just 300 metres from the airport’s terminal. This is a smart choice if you’re looking for a good night’s sleep before an early flight.

Novotel is the closest hotel to the airport, and with 24-hour room service available you don’t even need to leave the comfort of your room to get fed and rested before your journey.

Car Parking

For many of us, a holiday begins from the moment we lock the front door. If you prefer to drive to the airport to blast out those summer tunes along the way, Birmingham Airport has a great range of parking options for you.

Airparks Drop & Go – If you’re travelling on a budget, Airparks is a great choice. Simply drop your key off at the secure car park, hop on the free shuttle bus and you’ll be at your airport terminal in around 14 minutes.

Birmingham Short and Medium Stay Car Parks are located within walking distance of all terminals, and are a quick and fuss-free way to park your car.

Top Tip

Make a note of the area where you have parked as this can be easily forgotten after a week in the sun.

Check-in and Security

As with all airports, tight security measures are in place. Make sure you allow plenty of time at the airport for any security checks. It may also be worth contacting your airline beforehand to see if there are any new security measures in place.

If you want to beat the queues you can buy a fast pass extra, this is a great option if you hate queuing and it will free up more time if you want to make use of the airport’s facilities.

Top Tip

Pack a spare bag in the top of your suitcase, just in case you tip the scales. This way you can always transfer items to your hand luggage.

Lounges

A great way to start your holiday is relaxing in one of the airport lounges. Aspire, the number one lounge offers free Wi-Fi, complimentary newspapers, magazines, drinks and snacks, which is not a bad way to start your well-deserved holiday, right?

With all your snacks and drinks included, an airport lounge is a great way to budget your time in the airport. Prices start from £18.99 per person.

Bars and Dining

A whole host of family-favourite dining options are available at Birmingham Airport, including Burger King, Frankie & Benny’s and Wetherspoons, so one thing is for sure, you won’t go hungry while you’re waiting for your flight. If you’re jetting off to celebrate a special occasion, why not start your trip in style in Blanc et Noir champagne bar?

Top Tip

Make sure you sit close to one of the monitors displaying flight departures as you won’t need to get up and down as frequently to check the status of your flight.

Shopping

Most of us love a bit of tax-free shopping at the airport, and Birmingham Airport doesn’t disappoint with its great selection of shops, including Next, Victoria’s Secret and JD Sports.

Kid’s zone

Step into Sky Zone, this fantastic play area features all the latest technology and interactive games, including a soft play area for younger children. Make sure you watch out for the sky cadet mascot Zoom, because he loves a selfie!
